How to choose high-quality UHMWPE ground mats?

  1. Core material parameters: the cornerstone of quality
    This is the most important step in distinguishing between high and low quality. Be sure to inquire with the supplier about the following technical parameters:
    Molecular weight: This is the most crucial indicator. The higher the molecular weight, the better the wear resistance, impact resistance, and self-lubricating properties are usually.
    Entry level/standard level: usually between 3 million and 5 million. Suitable for general wear and tear scenarios.
    High performance level: reaching 8 million or more. Suitable for environments with severe wear and impact, such as mines and heavy equipment areas. In pursuit of high quality, products with high molecular weight (≥ 8 million) should be preferred.
    Wear resistance: usually expressed in terms of Taber Abrasion. The lower the value, the more wear-resistant it is. High quality UHMWPE boards should have very low Taber wear (e.g. below 40mg/1000 revolutions, specific values need to be consulted with suppliers and compared horizontally).
    Impact strength: Check the Izod Impact Strength of its cantilever beam gap. The higher the value, the stronger the impact resistance, and it is less likely to crack or break when impacted by falling objects.
    Density: The density of pure UHMWPE is about 0.93-0.94 g/cm ³, which is lighter than water. You can do a simple test: cut a small piece of the sample and put it in water, it should float up. If it sinks, it indicates that too much filler (such as calcium carbonate) may have been added, which will seriously reduce its wear resistance.
  1. Physical structure and processing technology
    Color and Uniformity:
    The high-quality blue UHMWPE pad should have a uniform and pure color. If the color appears gray or has mixed spots, it may be due to the use of recycled materials or inferior colorants.
    Note: Blue comes from added colorants. High quality colorants themselves should also have wear resistance, otherwise the surface color will be quickly worn off (although it does not affect the performance of the substrate, it affects aesthetics and recognition).
    Surface smoothness and flatness:
    The surface should be smooth and flat, without obvious cracks, bubbles, holes or impurities. These defects are stress concentration points that will first rupture.
    The warpage of the board should be minimized as much as possible to facilitate installation and splicing.
    Processing technology:
    Extruded board vs molded board:
    Molded board: usually has a higher molecular weight and better performance, especially in terms of impact resistance. It is the preferred choice for high-quality pads.
    Extrusion board: High production efficiency, low cost, and can be very long in length. The performance is usually slightly inferior to molded plates, but it can still meet many application requirements.
    Asking suppliers about their production processes can help determine their product positioning.
  2. Dimensions and tolerances
    Thickness and tolerance: Choose the appropriate thickness (usually ranging from 10mm to 50mm) based on your specific application (such as impact force and expected service life). Inquire about the tolerance range for thickness, strict tolerance control is a reflection of the manufacturer’s level of craftsmanship.
    Dimensional stability: High quality UHMWPE boards should have excellent dimensional stability and minimal deformation under temperature changes.
  3. Matching degree of application scenarios
    Select products with corresponding characteristics based on your usage environment:
    Extreme wear: For areas such as mining truck unloading zones and sand and gravel conveyor lines, priority should be given to using molded plates with ultra-high molecular weight (≥ 8 million).
    Heavy impact: For areas such as equipment assembly zones and areas frequently passed by forklifts, priority should be given to products with high impact resistance.
    Chemical environment: If there is oil pollution or chemical solvents on the ground, it is necessary to confirm the chemical corrosion resistance of UHMWPE (which has good resistance to most acid, alkali, and salt solutions).
    Outdoor use: If long-term outdoor use is required, inquire about the product’s UV resistance performance. Standard UHMWPE may experience performance degradation under long-term exposure to sunlight and requires the addition of UV stabilizers.
